These come from Fran — my neighbor, and a serious iris aficionado. She grows them, digs them, and labels every fan by hand. When the clumps get crowded they get split and moved along. That's the whole project. Dig and distribute.

Iris multiply. Left alone, a good clump chokes itself out. So they go into other people's ground instead of a warehouse. Whatever doesn't find a home by the end of September goes back in the dirt here.

Timing

Dug in summer, which is when you're supposed to dig them. Selling window is July, August, September. Get them in the ground by the end of that stretch and they'll root in before winter.

Planting

Plant shallow — the top of the rhizome sits at or barely under the surface. Buried deep is the one way to kill them. Point the leaf fan the direction you want it to grow. Sun and drainage. First season may be sparse. Second season they show up.

Iris Are Gangster

They grow well here in Colorado and they aren't needy. Old ranchers planted these around homesteads a hundred years ago and you can still find them out there marking property corners. Full sun, don't drown them, otherwise leave them alone.

Photos are representative. Rhizomes are sorted to a consistent base size, so what ships is comparable to what's pictured. These were dug in summer and photographed fresh — by the time yours arrives the leaf fan may be browned down. That's age, not damage. The rhizome is what you're buying.

Squeeze it. Firm is alive. Mushy is not. Firm and brown is alive and brown.

This is a live plant. It gets dug, cured, and packed with care on this end. Open the package when it lands, get the rhizome out of the plastic and into air. If you can't plant right away, set it somewhere cool, dry, and shaded. It'll wait.
